Dr. Sally Canestrari died on December 5th 2020. She was preceded in death two weeks ago by her husband. They were inseparable as a couple and it is not surprising that she let go to be with her soul mate shortly after he passed. She had a rebellious spirit and an amazing sense of humor. She practiced as a Clinical Psychologist in the Hampton Roads Area. She, her husband and business partners opened Colonial Hospital for Children and Adolescents. Sally secured her PhD at a time where women were starting to break the mold of gender roles in the educational and work arenas. She broke gender barriers in both areas and was a strong role model for her daughters.
Sally was survived by her daughters, Lisa Gaetano and her husband, Marion Gaetano, Julia Canestrari and husband, Roland Wallace, and Maria Isabel Velasco De Soto and her husband, Jose De Soto. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Patty, Nicole, Chris, Isaac, Derrick and Sebastian. Sally developed Alzheimer’s Disease in her later years. Despite her memory impairments she retained her humor, ability to love her family, and her fierce fight for her own independence. In moments where her loving energy and wisdom were needed she was able to connect and provide profound wisdom. She loved her “old man” and tried to console him through his struggle with losing his independence with age. She developed impactful relationships throughout her life. She loved passionately and fought passionately. She will be missed by many.
A memorial service and a celebration will be held for Sally and her husband in the future when there can be face to face gatherings again. Her remains will be at the Memorial Garden at William and Mary College. Donations may be made to the Community Table. 23 Central Street, Sylva NC 28779. The Cremation Society of Virginia will be handling the end of life arrangements. Condolences can be expressed online at vacremationsociety.com.
