VA Beach. Elizabeth Beatty Hitt (Betty) was resident of Westminster Canterbury on the Bay, Passed on to eternity on May 18, 2023 at the age of 90. She was born the daughter of the late E. Frank and Elizabeth Beatty in Richmond, VA. She was the wife of the late Ralph T Hitt, Sr.
Betty’s life was an onward adventure. She was raised in Norfolk and graduated from Maury High School in 1951. She attended TCC study accounting. She married Ralph in 1952 in a double Ceremony of Marriage with her twin sister, Frances B. And Bernard Rhees at Fort Monroe. Both Marriages lasted well over 50 years, until death they did part.
Betty moved to Colony Drive, Princess Anne County a couple years after she married. She and Ralph started a family having 3 children, Tom, Bob and Ellen. Betty was a stay at home mom and also worked by her husband’s side in the office of his Electrical Business. She was known for volunteering. Whether it be cub scouts, boy scouts, girl scouts, dance, cheering or just hosting an event. She was very active in the PTA and even won a car in a PTA raffle. She volunteered for 25 years with Meals on Wheels. Betty was a co-founder of Bow Creek Church as well as lifetime member. She was an active member of a yacht club in Norfolk. Betty lived for the next adventure. Ralph and Betty took many RV trips across America. They also took boat trip that was for a year. She and Ralph enjoyed hosting their annual backyard party, what an epic event. Another side of Betty was she loved to read, lay by the pool or just play bridge and board games with family and friends, but she always wanted to win.
Later in life she and her husband moved to WMC, living there for about 25 years. She became an active member of Bay Lake United Methodist Church. She joined the bridge club. She made many very good friends. She continued to travel and get out with friends and family.
Survivors include her twin sister, Frances B. Rhees, her son Robert Hitt (Melodie), Dorothy Hitt (widow of Tom) Barry Mclaughlin(widower of Ellen). Eight grandchildren: Devin Hitt-Horsfield (Scott), Holly Hitt-Cacace (Blake), Carmen Hitt Hawkins(Dan), Patrick Mclaughlin (Seyward), Mathew Mclaughlin (Ashley) Kaitlin Joyce( Scott) Jeff Hitt, Bryan Hitt(Bryce).15 great grandchildren: Chesney Prince(Danny) Madison Jones, Coleman Jones, Hailey Cacace, Blakely Cacace, Anthony Cacace, Raymond Hawkins, Kaiden McLaughlin, Bodie McLaughlin, Reagan Mclaughlin, Cameron Mclaughlin, Ellen Joyce, Colt Joyce, Nataly Hitt and Baylynn Hitt.
Betty was proceeded in death by her Husband Ralph T. Hitt, her daughter Ellen Hitt Mclaughlin and her son Ralph T. Hitt, Jr, her brother’s Claude and John Beatty and her brother in law Bernard Rhees.
Betty’s 90 years on this earth were full of adventure. She passed away knowing that her next adventure would be in Heaven. She will be missed, but we have to remember, Betty knew when to hold and when to fold.
Her Celebration of life will be held on Thursday, June 1, 2023 at 12 noon. Jenny Spivey will conduct the service in the chapel at Westminster and reception in the Bay Room to follow.
