Ernest Paul Rille, affectionately known as Ernie, passed away peacefully on January 31, 2026, in Chesapeake, Virginia, at the age of 83. Born on May 18, 1942, in St. Louis, Missouri, Ernie lived a life full of dedication, compassion, and love for his family and community.
Ernie spent much of his professional life dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of others. He served as a Safety Director for the Red Cross, where he utilized his expertise and passion for helping those in need. Later, he transitioned to education, becoming a beloved teacher and swim coach at Kempsville High School. Through his work, he left an indelible mark on countless students and athletes, imparting not just knowledge but also the values of discipline and perseverance.
Ernie’s interests were as varied as they were vibrant. A true lover of nature, he enjoyed spending time outdoors, fishing, and white-water canoeing. His passion for water safety was evident in his dedication to teaching these vital skills. An ardent cat lover, Ernie treasured the companionship of his feline friends throughout his life. He was also a proud member of the Coastal Canoeists, where he shared his enthusiasm for water sports with like-minded individuals.
Preceded in death by his parents, George John and Elsie Marie Rille, as well as his stepdaughter, Sarah Keels and her son, Michael Scott Kleyla. Ernie now joins them in eternal rest. He is survived by his devoted wife of 18 years, Julia Keels Rille, who stood by his side through life’s many adventures.
Ernie leaves behind a loving family, including his children Matthew Rille (Amy) and Anna DeGraaf, along with Lisa Missner and Michael Dominique Keels, Jr. He was a cherished grandfather to Everett and Lucas Rille, Emma DeGraaf, Matthew Coda Kleyla, and David Alexander Kleyla, each of whom brought immense joy to his life.
A memorial service will be held at a later date to celebrate Ernie’s life and legacy. Friends and family are encouraged to send their fondest condolences to the family on the Cremation Society of Virginia website.
Though Ernie has departed from this world, his memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. May he rest in peace.
