Frances Bacon Smith, age 88, passed away July 2, 2025, at Chesapeake Regional Hospital surrounded by those who loved her. She was born September 26, 1936, to the late Nathaniel and Mary Bacon and was their only child.
She is survived by her only daughter, Cynthia May, grandchildren, Chrystiane Grubbs, Courtney May, and Mary Taylor Mooney; seven great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
Frances loved to paint, sew, and tell jokes. She was a long-time member of Bethlehem Christian Church in Suffolk, Virginia. She had a heart for the less fortunate in Appalachia. For years she would make doll clothes and send them with a doll to children there. She was a proud graduate of Longwood University and made many friends with whom she has maintained friendships throughout her life.
Her biggest passion in life was for animals. She was always donating to causes that protected animals. Over her life, she has had numerous dogs which were mostly from shelters and were older and in need of special care. Her last little fur babies were Summer and Princess.
There will be a Celebration of Life ceremony at Bethlehem Christian Church in Suffolk on July 26, 2025, at 1pm. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to your local animal shelter or to the Chesapeake Humane Society in her honor.
