Harold Morrison Sattlethight, 1st Sergeant USMC Ret., age 90, of Virginia Beach passed away peacefully in his sleep on March 29. He was a native of the area and often reminisced about life in the old Princess Anne County. Harold was the son of Lewis William Sattlethight and Catherine Radford, both of Virginia Beach.
Harold was very proud to have served in the Marine Corps for over twenty years. He had two tours of duty in the Korean War, where he served as a sniper, and one in Vietnam. His time in the Marine Corps allowed him to travel the world and served as the source of many interesting stories – from stealing a fire truck in the Philippines during a monsoon to serving as honor guard for the late Queen Elizabeth while with SHAPE in Belgium. Harold’s sense of humor and storytelling abilities always kept people entertained.
Family was the highlight of Harold’s life and he was never happier than when he was with his children and grandchildren. He was married to the late Peggy Wenger Sattlethight and is survived by his three children: Dorothy LaPlante, Catherine Sattlethight (married to Mike Frerichs) and Henry Sattlethight. Grandchildren include Randi LaMark Vogel, Richard LaMark, Samatha LaPlante and Saoirse Small. He also has seven great grandchildren. His kind and gentle nature, combined with a hint of mischief, made him a favorite among children. He will be sorely missed.
