Hazel Clay “Ashley” Settles, 91, of Portsmouth, formerly of Virginia Beach, and a native of High Point, NC, died at Maryview Hospital, Portsmouth, on Monday, February 9, 2026.
Hazel was the daughter of the late Lyndsey Deen and Mattie Kerr Clay. She was the widow of Michael Edward Settles. Hazel is survived by her two sons, Richard Rouse Smith, Jr. (Kate) and Douglas Griffin Smith; a sister, Wanda Clay Hamilton; a grandson, Richard Tyler Smith and his mother, Elizabeth Stewart Hatton (Wiley); and nieces and nephews, who will all miss her greatly.
Hazel was a woman of faith, great creativity and was a part of many organizations and clubs over the years. She loved her family and the time spent with them.
