Homer Lewis, Jr, 90, of Newport News, VA, went home to the Lord on June 11, 2025. He was born September 22, 1934, in Washington, D.C., to the late Homer Lewis, Sr., and Anne Leah Lewis, from Vero Beach, Florida.
Homer was predeceased by his high school sweetheart and wife of 64 years, Claire Smith Lewis. He is survived by his children, Deborah Claire Price and her husband Bryan, Stephanie Ann Lewis, & Diane Elizabeth Fishburn, & sister-in-law Kay Carol Langford. Homer had three grandchildren: Elizabeth Claire Harris & her husband, Brendan; Emily Anne Shenk & her husband, Stephen; Eryn Marie Nunez and her husband, Benjamin. Homer had six great-grandchildren: Knox Philip Shenk, Katherine Diane Shenk, Abigail Louise Shenk, Ansley Jo Shenk, Gabrielle Claire Harris, and Isaac Christopher Harris.
Homer loved God, family, and country. He loved and trusted his Lord and Savior Jesus, was a devoted husband and father, a soldier, a distinguished veteran, and a dedicated civil servant, who left behind a legacy of faith, service, adventure, and love. Homer was a highly decorated veteran who honorably served 21 years in the U.S. Army, where he earned the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He served three combat tours in Vietnam as a helicopter pilot, where his courage and leadership earned him the respect of his fellow soldiers. After retiring from military service, he dedicated another 15 years to his country at Fort Monroe, Virginia, as a committed civil servant. An adventurer at heart, he found joy in hunting, fishing, and scuba diving—passions he shared with his daughters, instilling in them a sense of adventure. Beneath his warrior’s strength lay a tender heart, devoted to his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, whom he loved deeply. His unwavering dedication, kindness, and adventurous spirit will be cherished by all who had the honor of knowing him.

“Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.” 1 Thessalonians 4 13-14.
