Throughout his life, James wore many hats, excelling as both a skilled carpenter and a dedicated teacher. His hands built not only structures but also futures, as he inspired countless students with his love for learning and commitment to spreading knowledge. James believed in the power of education and the importance of nurturing young minds, a testament to his own academic journey at Dowling College, NY, where he earned his B.A.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, James was a man of diverse interests. He found solace in the stillness of fishing, joy in the art of cooking, and endless happiness in sharing laughter with his family. His sense of humor was infectious, and he had an uncanny ability to bring smiles to the faces of those around him.

James is preceded in death by his loving parents, Arthur and Catherine Smith, and his brothers, Artie and Bobby Smith. He is survived by his cherished children, James Arthur Smith, Garrett Blake Smith, Brandon Lee Smith and his wife Molly, and Joshua Alexander Smith. He leaves behind a legacy of love and wisdom for his grandson, James Arthur Smith Jr. His sister, Kate Marie Kessler, and her children, Jacob, and Benjamin Kessler and his niece Serafina Smith, will forever hold him in their hearts.

 

In honor of James’s remarkable life, the family is planning a celebration of life in New York on May 9, 2026. This gathering will be a time to remember the joy he brought into the world and the lives he touched. James Alan Smith’s spirit will continue to inspire all who knew him, reminding us of the beauty in teaching, the peace in nature, and the warmth of family.
