James Arthur Hook, born on February 16, 1940, in Iowa City, Iowa, passed away peacefully on December 16, 2025, in Portsmouth, Virginia, at the age of 85.
James was a dedicated and talented photographer whose work captured the essence of life through his lens. His career spanned several decades, during which he developed a keen eye for detail and a profound appreciation for the beauty in everyday moments. James walked his own path of belief, guided by compassion and understanding.
A proud veteran of the United States Army, James served his country with honor and integrity. His experiences in the military instilled in him a strong sense of discipline and commitment, qualities that he carried throughout his life.
James is preceded in death by his beloved parents, Harry Hook and Floy Dueling Hook, and his cherished husband, Thomas Lafayette Hemphill. He leaves behind a loving niece and other family members who will forever hold his memory dear.
In accordance with his wishes, a private celebration of life will be held at a later date. The Cremation Society of Virginia, Chesapeake Office, is assisting the family during this difficult time.
