James Earl Hurt, known to many as “Jim,” passed away peacefully at his home in Moyock, North Carolina, on July 9, 2024, at the age of 60.
Jim was born on May 11, 1964, in Wiesbaden, Germany, to the late Thomas Jerry Stamper Sr. and Lessie Jane Hurt. He was also preceded in death by his brother Thomas Jerry “Tommy/Tom” Stamper Jr. and his sister Cathy Cartwright.
Jim is survived by his devoted wife, Shannon Moylen Hurt; his children, James “Jay” Hurt Jr., Trevor Hurt, Miranda Hurt, and Sydney Hurt; his stepchildren Chris Sauerwald, Matt Hulse, and Sydney Hulse; his son-in-law, Terrence Gregory; and his beloved grandchildren, Carter and Avery. He also leaves behind his half-brother, Brian Stamper; his ex-wife, Martha Gray-Hurt; and many cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends.
Jim served as a communications specialist in the Army for eight years, demonstrating dedication and skill in his service to his country. Following his military career, he founded and operated a successful business specializing in the installation and refinishing of hardwood floors, laminate, and tile for over 30 years. He also worked as a welder at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard and, in his final years, served as a Structural Shop Supervisor at Old Dominion University.
Jim had a passion for life and a variety of interests that reflected his dynamic personality. He was an avid hunter and gun enthusiast who absolutely loved being outdoors, a devoted family man, and a tenderhearted “Paw Paw” to Carter and Avery. His love for cars, particularly Corvettes and AC Cobras, was well known, as was his enjoyment of singing along to Glen Campbell’s radio and reading Stephen King novels. Jim loved roller coasters and long drives and was always tinkering with tools, working on projects, and riding his zero-turn mower. Jim found his greatest happiness at his beautiful home in Moyock with Shannon, boating in the creek, tending their garden, chasing around chickens, working on house projects, and playing with their three dogs, Lessie, Addie, and Cain.
Jim’s impact on those around him was profound. He was a father figure to many, with countless individuals calling him “Dad.” He taught drive, hard work, dedication and selflessly aided and guided others to build their own careers in the flooring industry. His ambitious, honest, and fun-loving spirit will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. His kindness, generosity, and welcoming nature made him a friend to all. Jim had a remarkable ability to talk to and make friends with every person he met, whether at stores, restaurants, or other events. He radiated positive energy, lit up the room, and was known for his quick wit, jokes, and the ability to make everyone laugh and smile.
A celebration of Jim’s life will be held on October 12, 2024, at 3:00 PM.. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Jim’s memory to a charity of your choice.
Jim was the kindest soul, known for his generosity and warmth. He touched immeasurable lives and leaves behind a strong legacy of love and friendship.
