James Philip Dunn, born on December 29, 1971, passed away after a lifetime of service, leadership, and devotion to family. He was the treasured son of Philip Eugene Dunn and Mona Jean Dunn and beloved brother of Alicia Ann Dunn.
James’s first marriage was to Gretchen Leigh Millett, with whom he shared a son, Matthew Gregory Dunn. After Gretchen’s passing, James found love again and married Kimberly Joan Dunn. With Kim, he embraced a blended family, helping raise her two children, LeeAnna Mersadies Haney and Derek Michael Haney, alongside Matthew.
A Life of Service to Country
James proudly served more than 22 years in the United States Army, retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer 4 (CW4) in intelligence and security. His career included distinguished service with the 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment–Delta (Delta Force), where he provided critical leadership in security operations and supported sensitive missions with skill and integrity. He completed multiple combat deployments in support of the Global War on Terror, demonstrating courage and commitment throughout his military career and retired as a CW4.
Following his military service, James joined the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He held security leadership roles in Sacramento, San Diego, Hawai‘i, and Phoenix, and concluded his career as Chief Security Officer of the Norfolk Field Office.
Recognitions and Achievements
Throughout his career, James earned recognition for his exceptional contributions. His military awards included the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Army Meritorious Service Medal, and the Knowlton Award for Intelligence Excellence, among many others. In the FBI, he received multiple awards and citations for meritorious service, reflecting his consistent dedication to excellence.
Family, Community, and Passions
While James’s professional accomplishments were extraordinary, his greatest pride was his family. He was a devoted husband, father, stepfather, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend who found joy in guiding and supporting his loved ones.
Jim found joy in his leisure time through golfing, attending the races, and gathering with friends and family. He was a passionate gourmet cook, he showed his love and care by creating meals that brought people together, leaving lasting memories around the table.
He is survived by his wife, Kimberly J. Dunn; his son, Matthew G. Dunn, his wife Sophia and son Beckham; his stepson , Derek M. Haney and stepdaughter LeeAnna M. Haney and her sons Nolan A. Marty, Amos M. Chandler, his niece, Allison L. Moxcey, her husband, Keith, and stepdaughter, Tori; He also leaves behind his parents, Philip E. Dunn and Mona J. Dunn, and his sister, Alicia A. Dunn.
James will be remembered as a man of integrity, service, and compassion — someone who inspired others through his leadership and loved deeply through his role as a son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend.
Cremation Society of Virginia handled the cremation services. A graveside service is set for 11am, Saturday, September 27, 2025, in Pine Grove Cemetery in Poland, ME. Please offer your fondest condolences to the family on our website in their time of grief.
