Jimmie Z. Gribble, born on August 7, 1944, in Kennett, Missouri, passed away peacefully at the age of 81 on February 13, 2026, at his home surrounded by family in Newport News, Virginia. A devoted Christian, dedicated family man, and cherished friend, Jimmie’s life was a testament to his faith, love, and passion for preaching the word of God.
Jimmie graduated from the Memphis School of Preaching in 1970. He served as a minister for over 40 years in both the Hampton Roads area and Belleville, Michigan. He touched countless lives with his sermons and teachings. His voice was familiar to many through the WNIS Radio Station 790 AM with the Good News Broadcast on Sunday mornings, where he shared his love for the Word. To continue his outreach, he emailed fellow Christians his Thought for the Day sharing a quick scripture to help others get in a Christ-like mindset. He was a beacon of hope and an exemplar of kindness, spreading the love of God wherever he went.
Beyond his ministry, Jimmie’s work ethic was evident as he later became a driver for Enterprise Car Rental and Suttle Motors Company. His colleagues remember him as reliable and always ready with a story or a smile.
Jimmie’s interests were as lively as his personality. In his younger years, he found delight in woodworking, crafting with the same care he brought to everything he did. Fishing became a lifelong passion, one he joyfully shared with family and friends. Those who knew him, knew he had a soft spot for Westerns, a love for classic Corvettes, an appreciation for a good burger, and a heart that beat for bluegrass and Elvis music. Yet, above all, his greatest joy came from the laughter, love, and company of his beloved family.
Jimmie was preceded in death by his parents, Ezekiel and Grace Gribble, and his sister, Joann Charboneau. He leaves behind his loving wife, Donna Kay Gribble, who stood by his side for 62 years through every triumph and trial. He is also survived by his daughter, Rachel Leann Jones; granddaughter, Angela Nicole Hill and her husband, Matthew Hill; grandson, Joshua Brandon Jones; and great-granddaughters, Alaina Hill and Sydney Hill. Jimmie’s legacy lives on in them, as well as in the hearts of all who knew him.
A memorial service for Jimmie will be held on February 27, 2026 at 2pm at Peninsula Church of Christ, 502 Woodland Rd. Hampton, VA. The family invites all who knew him to join them in sharing some of their fondest memories.
