Joan Betty O’Neill, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on January 10, 2026, in Poquoson, Virginia, at the age of 90. Born on February 20, 1935, in Boscobel, Wisconsin, Joan lived a life marked by dedication to her family and a passion for exploration.
Joan graduated from Madison High School and went on to attend Air Force Draftsman School, where she honed her skills and began her career as a draftsman in the U.S. Air Force. Her time in the service was a testament to her commitment and skill, but it was her role as a homemaker that truly defined her life. Joan devoted herself to creating a warm and loving home for her family, instilling in them values of kindness, resilience, and curiosity.
Her love for travel took her across Europe, where she embraced new cultures and experiences with enthusiasm and an open heart. These adventures enriched her life and provided countless stories that she cherished sharing with her loved ones.
Joan is preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Hattie McDowell; her brothers, Anthony James Klinker and Thomas McDowell; her sisters, Laverne Hornberg and Karen McDowell; and her grandson, Liam O’Neill.
She leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories with her surviving family: her sons, Sean, Randall, and Shannon; her grandchildren, Britney, Emily, Maire, and Kieran; and her brother, Dennis McDowell, along with his wife, Ruthie. Joan’s presence will be deeply missed by all who knew her, but her spirit will continue to inspire those she leaves behind.
In this time of mourning, we remember Joan not only for her accomplishments but for the warmth and joy she brought into the lives of everyone she touched. Her memory will forever remain in our hearts.
