John Austin Slusser, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully at home from pancreatic cancer on July 1, 2024. He was aged 75. John was a resident of Saluda, Virginia for thirty-four years and previously lived in Virginia Beach for sixteen years.
John was born in Memphis, Tennessee in February 1949 to Dorothy Jane Abele Slusser and John Wagner Slusser, Jr. His mother remarried, and he was raised by James Ralph Jackson whom he affectionately referred to as “The Old Man”. He had a happy childhood filled with lots of travel. He attended Auburn University and followed all Tiger sports until the end. John was in the Naval ROTC and joined the Navy after graduating in 1967. He was a CPA and comptroller who spent most of his career at Beverly Enterprises in Virginia Beach and Fleet Brothers in Hartfield.
The Navy is what brought John to Virginia Beach, where he met and married the love of his life, Patricia Annie Revelle in 1976. He raised Patricia’s son, Timothy Wayne Golden, as his own. John’s daughter-in-law, Karen, and three grandchildren, John, Colin, and Seth, all admired and adored him. He shared his love of folk music and sports with his family, often showing videos of new bluegrass bands or watching Packers & Yankees games with them.
A celebration of life will be held at Pilot House Restaurant, 2737 Greys Point Rd, Topping, VA, on July 21st at 2:00. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a memorial gift in John’s memory be made to the Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society: https://www.gmhumanesociety.org/gifts-in-honor-or-memory.html
