John Bateman Neher, 83, passed away on June 19, 2024 with his loving wife, Betty, by his side. Born on December 20, 1940, in Newport News, VA to parents Marian Elizabeth (Curns) and Burgess Elwood Neher, John was raised in Miami, FL.
John graduated in 1958 from Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, GA with plans to enter military service but an incident affecting his eyesight prevented him from doing so. Instead, he embarked on a career with Eastern Airlines as a Comptroller. Upon returning to Virginia, he became owner of his heating and air conditioning business.
John was an active and faithful member of St. Mark Lutheran Church, a member of the Lions Club and the Seaford Yacht Club. While being an avid reader, he also enjoyed playing bridge and tennis and had a passion for golfing, fishing and power boating.
John is survived by his wife of 43 years, Betty Hamby Neher; his sister, Jackie Pionteck of St. Augustine, FL; nieces, Dr. Jill Wellman of Forest Hill, MD and Sherri Brintle of White Plains, NC; nephew, Jeff Wellman of Jacksonville, FL; cousins, Jim (Maggie) Bevelaqua of Seaford, VA and Lindsay (Jordan) Daly of Powhatan, VA, Chris Nida of Hampton, VA; sister-in-law, Carmen Snow of Mt. Airy, NC; brother-in-law, Harlan (Virginia) Hamby of Newport News, VA; and Betty’s children, Steven Lee Spiers of Newport News, VA and Susan Robins Choquette of Gloucester, VA.
A memorial service officiated by Pastor Joel Neubauer will be held on July 31, 2024, at 2pm at St. Mark Lutheran Church, located at 118 Old York-Hampton Highway, Yorktown, VA.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, St. Mark Lutheran Church, or Samaritan’s Purse.
Arrangements are being handled by the Cremation Society of Virginia.
