John Gilbert Kirk passed away peacefully on January 8, 2024, in Virginia Beach, Va. He dedicated over 40 years of his life to the Marine Coating and Repair Industry, leaving behind a remarkable legacy.
John began his career with Douglas Call Company, an established and successful company in the marine coating industry. He played an instrumental role as a Foreman managing crews in re-surfacing the decks of Navy aircraft carriers in Norfolk, Va. His expertise was crucial in the company’s retaining their prestigious Navy contract for this work over many years.
Following this, John joined Tecnico, a renowned company offering a comprehensive range of painting and blasting services. During his tenure, Tecnico was awarded a Coast Guard resurfacing contract. John was chosen to lead the crew, traveling extensively along the East Coast resurfacing one ship at a time. His dedication and commitment were unparalleled.
Later, John found a new home at International Flooring and Protective Coatings, where he assumed leadership of the marine division. Over 22 years, he grew the division to be what it is today and became one of the most valued employees in the company’s history. He was widely known as a strong leader who led by example and with compassion. His mentorship was highly regarded given his exceptional skills and knowledge in the industry. To most, he was more than a superior or a colleague, he was a friend.
Beyond his professional life, John had a deep passion for fresh water fishing and hunting. He found great joy in watching football, particularly cheering on his beloved Pittsburgh Steelers. These activities provided him with moments of relaxation and happiness.
John is preceded in death by his father, Jim Kirk, and his stepfather, Pete Barnard. John will be dearly missed by his surviving family, including his son Mark Kirk (Jamie), his daughter Kristen Harper (Rob), his brothers Micheal and Patrick Kirk, and his mother, Marie Barnard. He also leaves behind a cherished legacy through his grandchildren: Jaiden, Jodi, James, and Aurora Kirk, and Robby, William, and Grace Harper.
Services to honor John’s life will be held privately, allowing immediate family, close friends, and colleagues to celebrate his remarkable journey. John will be remembered as a supportive and loving father, grandfather, brother, and son. His humble and compassionate nature touched the lives of those around him, and his love knew no bounds.
