John P. Devenny, Jr. passed away peacefully on September 12, 2025, in Norfolk, Virginia, at the age of 95. Born on November 5, 1929, in Clifton Forge, Virginia, John lived a life marked by service and dedication.
John served his country with honor as a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy. Following his military career, he transitioned to civilian life by opening a ceramics store, where he crafted commemorative Navy mugs, blending his love for the Navy with his entrepreneurial spirit.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lillian Devenny, and his cherished daughter, Carrie Devenny. John is survived by his son, John H. Devenny, and his partner, Tereisa Diaz; his granddaughter, Jennifer Devenny; his step-grandson, Brian Nicewander; and his former daughter-in-law, Nancy Devenny.
A memorial service is being planned for a later date to honor John’s life and legacy. In accordance with his wishes, his ashes will be scattered on the family property in Clifton Forge, returning him to the place of his birth.
