John Wayne Griffith Jr.

John Wayne Griffith, Jr., born February 16, 1969, in Newport News, Va passed away suddenly on May 20, 2025 at the age of 56. He grew up in cities and states, but grew up in his teen years in Virginia and was a proud graduate of Poquoson High School. He loved sports, especially following the Washington Redskins and Alabama Crimson Tide, watching NASCAR, fishing and hunting. He is preceded in death by his grandparents, his step-brother Jerry “Bubba” Pinkard, Jr, Aunts Marie Gills, Christine Copeland, Tina Lawrence and Janice Griffith. John is survived by his loving mother Deborah Pinkard, step-father Jerry Pinkard, son Cody Griffith and three beautiful granddaughters, step-sister Emily Smith (Pinkard) and step-brother Jason Pinkard, aunts Louise Ferguson, Diana Griffith, Barbara Woolard, Sandra Purvis and Charlotte Gleba and numerous cousins.
A private service event will be held later.

Thinking about my baby, though he was 56, I remember how I could really trust him to come home when I 'whistled '. He could go anywhere as long as he stayed within 'Whistling Distance'. I felt so bad when he came running home, out of breath and said how quick he was to get home and I had to tell him that wasn't me. He was a very good child. I miss my boy.

John will always be remembered by me as my cousin who had a smile that lit up the room. He was the young man in school that everyone wanted to be around, smiling, and easy to like from the average student to the most popular. It seemed he had a movie star like charisma that drew people to him. I always enjoyed when our families were together. Over time we all grew up and I was so proud of his accomplishments, though I moved and staying in touch was more difficult years ago. He was there for us when my dad passed and was a pall bearer at the service. I’ll always remember John’s quick wit, kindness and that dimpled smile. Prayers for you and your family now and always.

John was a good husband and a terrific father to Cody. RIP John

My baby, my son. I love our lunch shortly before you passed. I'm so thankful for your smiles and happiness you were feeling at our lunch. I would've hugged you tighter. I froze the desert you insisted I take and will eat it at a private moment I reflect on our life. You and me, against the world for so long. It's reassuring that you are my guardian angel now. I love you so much.
