John William “Clutch” Miller Jr., 95, of Norfolk, Virginia passed away peacefully on December 10, 2025 leaving behind a legacy of humor, devotion, and service. Born on April 3, 1930 in Roanoke, Virginia, John was the son of a proud Virginia family and a man whose life reflected loyalty to his country, his faith, and his loved ones.
A graduate of Andrew Lewis High School in Salem, John began his remarkable career of service soon thereafter joining the U.S. Navy. He dedicated 26 years to his country, performing his duties with distinction, including tours in Vietnam. A C-130 crew chief, John loved the skies, the camaraderie of his fellow service members, and the adventure of traveling the world. His meticulous nature and commitment to excellence earned him the nickname “Clutch,” a testament to his reliability and calm under pressure.
Following his retirement from the Navy, John embarked on a second successful career with Sears, Roebuck and Company. Through steadfast work and leadership, he rose into management and was always respected for his kindness and integrity. After leaving the corporate world, John devoted his time and heart to his community. A longtime member of St. John’s United Methodist Church, he served faithfully as head usher and steward of the church’s finances, a role that reflected his sense of responsibility and care for others.
John’s passions were as wide-ranging as his experiences. An avid golfer, he proudly achieved a hole-in-one and once won a tournament at Eagle Haven Golf Course with a round of 72. He loved sports, especially football and baseball, traveling, and keeping up with the weather, a habit he’d developed during his time in uniform. His household was always brightened by the company of his beloved dogs, Missy, Maggie, and Thor.
Friends and family remember John as funny, witty, and endlessly charming. He was a lover of gadgets and technology, a faithful friend to his breakfast club, and above all, a loving partner to Barbara Wells, with whom he shared deep affection and companionship in his later years. John was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Marie Miller, his beloved spouse with whom he spent 51 years raising their family and traveling the world in the service of their country, and their daughter, Ann Blood and their son-in-law, David Blood. He is survived by his sons, Michael and his wife Hilda, and John III and his wife Laura, as well as his cherished companion, Barbara. John leaves behind several grandchildren, Rachel and her husband Will, Matthew and his wife Mady, and Elizabeth. He is also survived by two great grandchildren, Corinne and Lena.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to @ Heart Homecare & Hospice in John’s memory. As the 23rd Psalm reminds us, “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” Please post your fondest condolences to the family on the Cremation Society of Virginia website.
