On Thursday, December 23,2021, Joseph “Tony” A. Poplin, 58, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ after a courageous battle with Brain Cancer. Tony was born on April 23, 1963 in Newport News, VA to the late Benjamin and Doris Poplin.
He graduated from Ferguson High School in 1981 and married the love of his life, Cindy Davis Poplin. He was employed at the Newport News Shipyard for 38 years. He was a material support supervisor and also worked with a team implementing computer technology roll out to the trades in data analyzing. Tony held many Excellence in Action Awards and qualifications while at the Shipyard.
Tony was a member of the Free Hunters Hunt Club and he was elected to be Vice President, Chief cook, and their website coordinator. In his free time, he enjoyed hunting, gardening, being outside in his yard, piddling around in his garage and listening to music. He also enjoyed fishing, shag dancing with Cindy, singing in the choir, cooking, especially barbecue at the hunt club, and traveling with his family and best friends.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, best friend, and soulmate of 38.5 years Cindy Poplin; children, Andrew T. Poplin (Danielle), Taylor A. Berry (Spencer); sisters, Darlene Poplin Hinson (Tim), Karen Poplin Ivey (Denny); brother, Stephen Poplin (Lindsay); many nieces, nephews, cousins, and great friends. We would like to thank so many neighbors, friends, coworkers, Karen, Darlene, Stephen, Greg, Rosie, and Alton for helping our family with transporting Tony to his treatments, picking Tony up from a fall, visiting him at home, bringing food, and helping with his care. Special Recognition goes to Dr. Dean Kostov, neurosurgeon from RRMC, Dr. Mustafa Baskaya and staff from University of Wisconsin Neurosurgery, Personal Touch Homecare and Hospice, Hampton Roads Proton Therapy staff and Dr. Allan Thornton, and lastly the exceptional Virginia Oncology Associates staff/chemo infusion nurses, Dr. Paschold, Miriam New, NP, Kim Heath, NP and Dr. Kruger.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, January 30, 2022, 2 pm at Williamsburg Community Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Glioblastoma Foundation @ https://gliobastomafoundation.org. Cremation Society of Virginia is handling the arrangements.
