Kenneth Collier Greene was called home on the afternoon of May 10th, 2023. Kenneth was 72 years loved. His passage was peaceful and cloaked in the affection of his beloved family at his home in Virginia Beach.
Kenneth, more commonly known as Ken or Kenny, was born to Emmette Lessell Greene and Mary Ruby Collier on April 28th, 1951 in Durham, North Carolina. His only sibling and first “partner in crime”, Mary Tempe Greene, was born 11 months later. After graduating from Cox High School in 1969, Ken attended East Carolina University and joined the Navy Reserves. Following the Reserves, Ken finished his education at Old Dominion University where he studied law.
Ken was a man of few words and a brilliant mind. He loved the snow, animals, laughter, and an extraordinary Christmas for his family. He possessed and regularly exercised a sharp wit and love for shenanigans. In his youth, he played the piano, danced often, loved movies and won most every trivia challenge posed to him. His later life found him no less astute. He enjoyed reading, playing Bridge competitively, running his own businesses, and perfecting his golf game.
In August of 1980 at Trixx Disco, Ken met the love of his life, Holly Pell, and asked for the next available spot on her dance card. That one moment of courageous swagger opened the door to a lifetime of love and fulfilment. Ken and Holly were married in Norfolk on September 14th, 1983 and very rarely apart since. Ken found a great deal of comfort with Holly at his side and in October of 2018, after 35 years of marriage, Ken and Holly renewed their vows with a small ceremony in front of friends and family. Ken held many titles in his life, from surveyor to business owner, but his favorite role, by far, was being a father to his three girls, Jennifer, Alexandra, and Morgan. For more than 40 years, Ken’s heart and calendar were filled with flourishing family moments. His girls’ first steps turned into first cars, t-ball games developed into softball tournaments, grades advanced to graduations, high school dances became weddings, and eventually his little girls grew into mothers of their own. Ken had absolute pride in his family and watching his girls grow was his greatest fortune.
Ken was predeceased by his parents, Emmette and Mary Greene; and his sister, Tempe Greene. He is survived by his wife, Holly Greene; his daughters, Jennifer Zoby, Alexandra Cleek, and Morgan Varner; his sons-in-laws that he loved as though they were his own, Greg Zoby, Andrew Cleek, and Joseph Varner; as well as his 7 grandchildren, Zach & Peyton Zoby, Duke & Drew Cleek, Mila, Mollie & Miller Varner.
A celebration of Ken’s life will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, May 20, 2023 at Thalia United Methodist Church, 4321 Virginia Beach Blvd., Virginia Beach. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Thalia United Methodist Church in Ken’s honor. Condolences may be left for the family at www.vacremationsociety.com.
