Virginia Beach- Lawrence V. Gurioli passed peacefully to the care of the Good Shepherd on April 9, 2018. He was surrounded by family as a favorite hymn played, just days after his 70th birthday.
Larry was born April 5, 1948 in Highland Park, IL to Lawrence V. Gurioli, Sr. and Ann (Dean) Gurioli. He met his future wife, Carol (Heylek) Gurioli while attending Lake Forest College from which he received a B.S. in Sociology in 1970. The couple moved to New Jersey in 1971where Larry completed a Masters of City and Regional Planning. He worked as a planner in Freehold, NJ, Genesee County and Ann Arbor, MI. In 1982 he was commissioned as a Supply Corps Officer (USN). The family moved to Virginia Beach in 1983 prior to his deployment aboard the USS Portland (LSD-37) supporting the U.N. peacekeeping force in Lebanon. Marines from the ship were victims of the terror attack on the BLT in Beirut. After serving at the Fleet Combat Training Center Atlantic, he returned to the civilian world in1987 to keep his family in Virginia Beach. He maintained his Navy career in the active reserves, during which he served 6 months during Operation Desert Storm. He retired as a Commander.
Larry enjoyed daily challenges as Stat Stores and Inventory Control Supervisor at Sentara Norfolk General and Sentara Leigh starting in 1987. After retiring in 2014 he was a faithful volunteer with his old department until illness prevented him.
Active in civic and community affairs throughout his life, he became most involved in his later years at his church. His participation in the church choir grew out of his lifelong passion for music. Participating in the Christmas concerts was his greatest joy. In every setting Larry was respected and liked for his wit, kindness and dedication to service.
Having a disciplined fitness regimen never prevented him from sharing a craft beer or a round of golf with a friend. Besides sharing travel adventures with Carol, dining with friends, playing his recorder and harmonica, and listening to his varied musical collection, Larry relished presiding at the dinner table whenever family gathered.
Left to cherish Larry’s memory are his beloved wife of 47 years (Carol), his daughter Valerie and her daughter Zoe, his son Vincent and daughter in law Dawn and their two children Landen and Lyra. He is also survived by his 97- year- old mother (Ann), and his sister Elizabeth Ann (Cobbs) and brother- in- law William (in Ecuador).
A funeral service will be conducted Saturday, April 28, 2018 at 2 p.m. at Old Donation Episcopal Church with the Rev. Robert J. Randall, Jr. officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military honors. Attendees are invited to share memories at a reception at Tucker Hall immediately following the service.
