Leonardo (Leo) S. Daquioag, age 77, was born on February 24, 1945 in Laoag, Ilocos Norte, Philippines. After completing his schooling, he intended to start a profession as a teacher. These plans changed when he redirected his goals and enlisted into the United States Navy on February 17, 1967. This decision was a catalyst for life changing opportunities for him and the Daquioag family.
Leo was decorated with several accomplishments and awards during his time in the US Navy. A few of his recognitions include:
- Meritorious Unit Commendation
- National Defense Service Medal
- Five Good Conduct Medals
- EM3 Electrical Repairman Decoration Medal
On February 19, 1982, as EMI, he passed the gateway to the top of the world by crossing the Arctic Circle aboard the USS Fort Snelling. On January 31, 1983, he completed the transit of the Suez Canal aboard the USS America (CV-66). On February 26, 1983, while aboard the USS America, he was described as, “EMI Leonardo Daquioag having been found qualified to be numbered as one of our honored shellbacks and he has been duly initiated into the ‘Solemn Mysteries of the Ancient Order of Shellbacks.’” On September 16, 1984, he was promoted as Chief Petty Officer. He retired on June 1, 1988 and by his official release from the Reserves on March 1, 1997, he had risen to the title of Chief Electrician’s Mate and retired as an electrician teacher.
Aside from his time in the US Navy, he also worked as a taxi cab driver in Virginia before officially retiring. Being the true Seaman that he was, he had an affinity for water and enjoyed spending his free time fishing.
He was a role model and hero by many and will be remembered for many reasons. Due to his many sacrifices and decision to enlist into the US Navy, he was able to sponsor his family to immigrate to the United States.
