Lewis E. W. King, affectionately known as “Sandy,” of Gloucester, Virginia, passed away peacefully on December 17, 2025, at the age of 72. Born on April 30, 1953, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Sandy lived a life marked by dedication to his country, his family, and his passions.
Sandy proudly served his nation as a member of the United States Army for 22 years, retiring with honor. During his distinguished military career, he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal (3rd award), Army Commendation Medal (2nd award), Army Achievement Medal (4th award), Army Good Conduct Medal (7th award), and the Army of Occupation Medal. His commitment to excellence and service was evident in all he did.
Following his military service, Sandy continued to contribute to his community through his work in road construction and maintenance. He served as a yard manager at Jack Massie for six years, worked as a maintenance manager at Stauch-Dasher Group, and spent a year at Branscome focusing on road construction and heavy equipment maintenance.
Sandy was a man of many interests. He had a passion for restoring and owning antique cars, enjoyed target shooting and hunting, and was an avid collector of Lionel trains. He was a proud member of the Middle Peninsula Car Club of Gloucester, where he shared his love for classic automobiles with fellow enthusiasts.
Education was important to Sandy, who earned his GED and pursued two years of college courses at Northern Virginia Community College. He valued learning and encouraged those around him to pursue knowledge and personal growth.
Sandy is preceded in death by his beloved parents, Lewis William King and Elizabeth (Lawrence) King, as well as his brother, John “Jack” Roberts King. He leaves behind a loving family, including his devoted wife, Barbara J. King of Gloucester, VA; his cherished daughter, Tara M. King of Gloucester, VA; his son, Lewis W. J. King and his wife Alicia of Williamsburg, VA; and his brother, William L. King of Hague, VA. Sandy also leaves behind special friends Joseph Perone of NJ, Douglas Carpenter of AK, John Reed of AL, Michael Brown of NC, and Ken Mortensen of VA, who will miss his camaraderie and friendship.
A memorial service to celebrate Sandy’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Sandy’s name to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, 2361 Hylan Blvd, Staten Island, NY 10306, or to the Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society, P.O. Box 385, Gloucester, VA 23061.
Sandy will be remembered for his unwavering dedication, his love for family and friends, and his zest for life. He touched the lives of many and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
