Lide Claire Smith Lewis, 88, of Hampton, VA, fell asleep in Christ on April 28, 2023. She was born April 19, 1935, in Saint Lucie County, FL, to the late David “Bo” Clair Smith and Lide Turner Smith.
Claire is survived by her high school sweetheart and husband of 64 years, Homer Lewis Jr.; children, Deborah Claire Price and her husband Bryan, Stephanie Ann Lewis, & Diane Elizabeth Fishburn; sister, Kay Carol Langford; grandchildren; Elizabeth Claire Harris & her husband Brendan, Emily Anne Shenk & her husband Stephen, Eryn Marie Price & her fiancé Benjamin Nunez; great-grandchildren; Knox Philip Shenk, Katherine Diane Shenk, Abigale Louise Shenk & Gabrielle Claire Harris.
Claire was kind, encouraging, giving, and gentle, touching many lives with her God-given patience, wisdom, and humor. As a wife and mother, she faithfully and unconditionally loved her husband and family, as well as children, babies, and being a military wife. She believed it was her God-given vocation to care for and love others; she lived that out by teaching Sunday school, Mother’s Day Out at Wesley United Methodist Church, and serving in the Mom-to-Mom ministry at Peninsula Community Chapel, which she did for well over 40 years. She also loved to sing in the choir and was perhaps happiest when pouring herself into babies and children, and it did not matter whose they were since she loved them all.
Flowers are welcome but if you would prefer to donate, we ask that you do so to Peninsula Community Chapel (for its missionary ministries) or to the American Cancer Society. Our family has been thoroughly blessed and is thankful for all the countless prayers and physical and emotional support Claire received over the past year and a half during Claire’s illness. Our church family has loved us well and we are grateful for your care in our time of need.
A celebration of life will be held at Peninsula Community Chapel, Yorktown VA, on May 7, 2023, at 2:00 PM.
“Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.” 1 Thessalonians 4: 13-14.
