Lt. Col Henry W. Stankus, USMC Retired, passed away on October 9, 2018, in Chesapeake, Virginia.  Born March 10, 1921, in Wallingford, Connecticut, he enlisted in the Marines in March 1939 and served until June 1964.  The Marines recognized his leadership ultimately promoting him to Captain during WWII and acknowledged his bravery by awarding him the Bronze Star for his actions on Guadalcanal in October 1942 and the Navy Cross for his actions on New Britain in December 1942.  When the wounds he received on New Britain sent him stateside for recovery then to Basic School in Quantico, he met his wife of 61 years, Eliza Jane, then a Sergeant in the Marines.  Their only child, David, was born while stationed in Tokyo, and his last assignment was at Stanford Research Institute in Menlo Park, California.  His second professional career was as head of inside sales for  Allegheny Ludlum Steel in his hometown.  The son of immigrants, he was proud of his Lithuanian heritage.  Hanks favorite pastime was fishing, preferably for trout in the backwoods of Maine, and was an avid card player and reader.  Semper Fi Hank.

Hank was predeceased by Eliza Jane.  He is survived by David and his wife, Laurie, as well as her daughters Erin (Brian) Stewart and Kellie Burdick.  His family would like to thank Kristie Chappell and Jen Scholl with Medi Hospice and their respective staffs for Hanks loving care.  There will be no visitation.  Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery.  The Cremation Society of Virginia is serving the family.
