Margaret Anna Schaeffer, born on June 24, 1926, in Philadelphia, PA, passed away peacefully at the age of 99 on February 24, 2026, in Hampton, VA. Margaret lived a life full of love, service, and adventure, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege to know her.

A dedicated surgical nurse, Margaret earned her BS in Nursing from the Frankford Hospital School of Nursing, where she began her lifelong commitment to helping others. Her passion for care extended beyond nursing as she became a staunch advocate for the disabled, driving a school bus in the Philadelphia Public School system and leading the Handicapped Crusaders.

Margaret was a woman of many interests and passions. She truly loved life and embraced it with open arms. A music enthusiast, history buff, an avid reader and follower of the weather and news. She was a member of the Hampton Historical Society and found joy in learning about the world around her. Her fascination with science fiction, particularly Star Trek and Doctor Who, inspired her sense of wonder and imagination.

Her love for aviation was evident as she cherished visits to museums, local bases and NASA, culminating in the unforgettable experience of flying a single-engine plane on her 84th birthday. Margaret’s daily ritual included a refreshing Coca-Cola, and never said no to a good hot meal. Simple pleasures brought her joy.

Margaret’s warmth and kindness touched everyone in her circle. She had a unique ability to make each person feel special, often sending handwritten cards to show her appreciation and affection. Her role as a “fun grandma” was one she wore with pride, creating cherished memories with her family, including her loving children Milton Schaeffer, Karl Schaeffer (Bernadette), and Christie Noble (Alan), seven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

Preceded in death by her beloved husband, Alfred Spencer Leroy Schaeffer, her loving parents, Milton and Anna Teague, and her best friend, June Kolessar. Margaret is survived by a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and her dear friend, Dot Ziegler, all of whom will miss her dearly.

Margaret Anna Schaeffer’s legacy is one of love, compassion, and an unyielding zest for life. She leaves behind a tapestry of cherished memories and a reminder to all to live fully and love deeply.”
