Mary Catherine Nelson, born on August 15, 1943, in Newport News, VA, passed away peacefully on November 12, 2025, in Lancashire Post Acute in Kilmarnock, VA, at the age of 82. Her journey through life was marked by resilience, love, and a steadfast commitment to her family.

Mary was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose warmth and kindness touched everyone who had the privilege to know her. She was an independent soul, fiercely dedicated to providing the best life she could for her children. Her work ethic and determination were evident in her career at U-Haul, where she worked diligently for six years before retiring in 2010.

A fan of NASCAR, Mary cheered fervently for Dale Earnhardt Jr., and her love for country music was evident in her admiration for artists like Reba McEntire and Kenny Chesney. Her family will forever cherish the memories of her singing along to her favorite tunes and her laughter while watching “The Golden Girls.”

Mary’s baking skills were unparalleled, and her family will always remember the pound cake recipe she perfected—a testament to her love expressed through countless delicious slices shared at family gatherings. Her kitchen was a place of warmth and comfort, much like her presence in the lives of those she loved.

As a member of The 1514 Hampton Moose Lodge, Mary found companionship and joy, meeting her loving late husband, Enoch Wesley Nelson, with whom she shared many cherished years.

Preceded in death by her parents, Mary Etta and John Thomas Colbert, her beloved husband Enoch, her children Floyd Minton Jr., Kenneth Minton, Linda Fuller, and Curtis Minton, grandsons Cory and Ryan Minton, and siblings Tommy Colbert and Dot Beacham, Mary’s legacy is carried on by those she leaves behind.

She is survived by her loving son, John Nelson, grandchildren Heather Cotton and Zach Fuller, and great-grandchildren Lola Cotton, Alana Cotton, and Aiden Powell. Her brother, Robert Colbert, and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members, along with the many children who considered her a mother figure, will continue to be inspired by her unwavering support and encouragement.

Mary was her family’s biggest cheerleader, and her spirit will continue to guide them, as they remember her not only for her strength and independence but also for her boundless love and the beautiful life she lived. Her memory will forever remain a beacon of hope and inspiration to all who knew her.
