November 19, 1962 - August 9, 2024

In loving memory of Matthew Hillman Sr. who sadly passed on Friday, August 9 th at the age of 61. He passed at home surrounded by family after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Matthew was born in New York City, New York where he lived until joining the United States Navy where he retired as a Chief Petty Officer. Matthew and his family settled in Virginia Beach, Virginia in 1983 and have remained since.

Matthew is survived by his wife of forty-one years Kathy, his two sons Matthew Jr. and Joshua, and his sister and three brothers Brooke, David, Seth, and Daniel.

The family would like to invite you to a Celebration of Life Service. The service will take place at H.D. Oliver Funeral Home at 2002 Laskin Rd., Virginia Beach, VA 23454. on Saturday, August 17th at 11:00 a.m.

Matthew was a charismatic, hardworking, and kind man. To know his kindness was to have a light shine on you with genuine interest and compassion.

So very sad to learn of Matt’s passing. I first crossed paths with Matt on the USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70). He had a great personality, awesome sense of humor (enhanced by the New York accent) and was a smart and hard worker. Our paths have crossed over the years here and there and I will always have fond memories of this shipmate on the Vinson. My prayers go out to all of his family. Rest in Peace, my friend.

Kathy and family, my heart breaks for all of you. While we haven’t seen each other in a long time I have very fond memories of mine and Matt’s tour on the Carl Vinson precom unit. We were able to stay in touch through work. He was wonderful friend who was always will to help the sailors on the ships. Matt the Navy is better because of Chief Petty Officers like you, “Fairwinds and following seas, we will see you again”
