Virginia Beach – We are celebrating the life of Michelle Louise Jekel, a beloved daughter, sister, sister-in-law, aunt (“Tía”), and friend to many, who passed away on July 21, 2025, at the age of 52.
Michelle was born and raised in Flint, MI. She graduated with honors from Carman-Ainsworth HS and later obtained dual bachelor’s degrees in Spanish and Advertising from Michigan State University. After her first job in advertising and marketing at Matel Toys, she decided to follow in her mother’s footsteps and become a teacher. She obtained a master’s degree in education and ultimately returned to CAHS where she taught Spanish and Speech for many years.
Those who knew Michelle knew that she loved anything having to do with Madonna or Michael Jackson. She had an amazing collection of CDs and memorabilia, and she would reliably break into dance when any of their songs came on the radio. Later, Michelle became very interested in genealogy and worked hard on several projects that pieced together her own family’s history. But her greatest pleasure came from interacting with people. Her best friend Gail and her college roommate, Lola remained lifetime sources of joy and comfort for her.
Michelle will be remembered for her individual expression, uniqueness, kindness, and generosity. “It’s my treat”, she would often say when going out with her sister, Stacy. She added color to all our lives, and for this, she will be sorely missed.
Michelle was preceded in death by her loving mother, Carol. She is survived by her father, Don, her sister, Stacy (Andy), and her adoring nieces, Liv and Drew.
Special thanks to the amazing staff at Arden Court in Virginia Beach, who guided her with grace and dignity through her final stages.
