It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Patricia McGowan Alvarado, who departed this life on June 23, 2025, at the age of 79. Born on July 2, 1945, in Alexandria, Virginia, Patricia spent her final days surrounded by family in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Patricia was a devoted homemaker, dedicating her life to her family, whom she loved fiercely. Her children and grandchildren were the center of her world, and she cherished every moment with them. Fondly referred to as “Dear” by her grandchildren, a title warmly inherited from their grandfather, Patricia’s nurturing spirit and unwavering love left an indelible mark on all who knew her.
Patricia had a great passion for quilting and gardening, finding joy and peace among her beloved plants. She possessed a deep-seated love for the ocean and relished her monthly trips to Hatteras, where she found solace by the water. A woman of profound faith, Patricia was devoted to her nightly rosary prayers, drawing strength and comfort from her spiritual practices.
During her daughters’ younger years, Patricia was actively involved in the Girl Scouts, fostering a spirit of community and empowerment. She was a steadfast supporter of St. Matthew’s Catholic School, where her commitment to family and faith was evident to all.
Patricia is preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Dorothy McGowan, and her sister, Mary Katherine Hicks. She is survived by her beloved husband of 48 years, Francisco Alvarado; her children, Meghen Alvarado, Jessica Gusman, and Rick Collum; and many cherished grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She also leaves behind her sisters, Susan Turner and Anne Sampson.
A Mass of Catholic Burial will be celebrated at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church, located at 3314 Sandra Ln, Virginia Beach, VA 23464 on July 7, 2025 at 2:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St. Matthew’s Catholic School or Dear’s Eagles Wing Scholarship in Patricia’s memory. Her legacy of love, devotion, and faith will continue to inspire those who were blessed to know her. May she rest in eternal peace.
