Peter R. “Pete” Barker, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully in his sleep on June 29, 2025, at the age of 93, in Virginia Beach, VA. Born on August 2, 1931, in Queens, NY, Pete lived a life full of service, dedication, and community involvement.

Growing up in Queens, Pete attended local schools where he developed a passion for sports, playing basketball and football. In 1951, driven by a sense of duty to his country, Pete joined the Army and served honorably during the Korean War. His service took him to Louisiana, Florida, and Japan until his discharge in 1953.

Upon returning to New York after the war, Pete embarked on a journey of entrepreneurship. He started with odd jobs but soon founded his own highway construction company. In 1964, alongside his beloved wife Maureen, Pete relocated to Greensboro, NC, where his company played a pivotal role in building state highways, bridges, roads, and airport runways. It was during this period that their son, Peter, was born.

In 1968, the family moved to Maryland to expand Pete’s business, welcoming their daughter Janine into their lives. Three years later, they settled in Virginia Beach, VA, where Pete became a cornerstone of the community. A devout Catholic, he became an active member of St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, where he helped establish the Men’s Club and supported church expansion projects through community fundraising efforts.

An enthusiast of the Norfolk Tides and Baltimore Colts, Pete was passionate about sports and even attended the iconic 1958 NFL Championship game at Yankee Stadium. Beyond his love for sports, Pete’s commitment to his community led him to help form the Knights of Columbus Council 9056, becoming a charter member. He was also involved with the Father Habets Council 4632, St. Mathews Council 10601, and the Ancient Order of Hibernians.

In his later years, Pete embraced a new career as a real estate Broker, earning accolades for his work. His dedication to the Pro-Life movement was unwavering, and in 2013, he made headlines for helping shut down an abortion clinic.

Pete was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Maureen, with whom he shared 38 wonderful years, his parents Francis and Edith Barker (née Penfield), and his brother Frank Barker. He is survived by his loving children, son Peter and his wife Monica Barker, daughter Janine and her husband Stephen Mezzapeso, and his devoted best friend of over 30 years, Drake Hoffman.

A devoted family man and friend, Pete’s legacy is one of love, integrity, and commitment to the greater good. Services to honor and celebrate Pete’s remarkable life will be held at St. Matthew Roman Catholic Church, with details to be announced.
