Richard D. Knox, Jr., cherished son, brother, and devoted partner, passed away peacefully on March 18, 2026, just days before his 76th birthday. Born on March 22, 1950, to Richard D. Knox, Sr. and Margaret L. Knox (née Liming), Rick’s life was marked by warmth, integrity, and unwavering commitment to those he loved.
Growing up as the eldest of three brothers, with Gregory and Charles arriving in the following years, Rick’s childhood was shaped by his father’s service in the United States Marine Corps. The family moved frequently, but Virginia always felt like home. Rick began his education in Triangle, Virginia, and also attended school in Norfolk before graduating from Quantico High School in 1968. His academic journey continued at The College of William & Mary for a year, after which he transferred and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1973.
Rick’s professional career began at Peat Marwick & Mitchell (KPMG), where he became a Certified Public Accountant and his diligence and skill led him to eventually become a Manager. In 1988, he brought his expertise to the Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters, serving as Chief Financial Officer until his retirement. Rick’s commitment to community was evident in his long-standing involvement with the United Way of Hampton Roads, where he served on the board for many years, including a tenure as treasurer.
In 1973, Rick met the love of his life, Robert Minnich, in Richmond. Together, they restored two historic homes in the Fan District before relocating to Virginia Beach, drawn by their shared passion for boating. Their home in North Virginia Beach became a sanctuary for friends, neighbors, and their beloved Dobermans, a breed they cherished and often had two at a time. In 1998, seizing the opportunity to expand their home, Rick and Bob renovated an old cabin on Crystal Lake, quickly becoming beloved fixtures in the neighborhood.
For 25 years, Rick and Bob found joy and relaxation during their annual three-week retreat to their cherished timeshare in Cancun, Mexico—a testament to their love for the beach, adventure and each other.
Rick’s life was enriched by his family. He was preceded in death by his partner, Bob, in 2016, and his brother Greg in 2025. Greg is survived by his daughter, Tricia. Rick’s brother Charlie carries on his memory, along with Charlie’s children: Damien, Justin, and Lauren—Rick’s beloved nephews and nieces.
Rick will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and steadfastness. Whether as a dedicated professional, a loving partner, a supportive brother and uncle, or a trusted friend, his legacy endures in the many lives he touched and the communities he helped shape. His infectious laugh, welcoming spirit, and deep compassion will be dearly missed but never forgotten.
A memorial gathering and celebration of Rick’s life will be planned at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the United Way of Hampton Roads or the Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters, reflecting Rick’s lifelong dedication to making a lasting difference.
