Robert Edward Mitchell, Jr., lovingly known as “Mitch” or “Junior” passed away Monday, May 24, 2021 in
Newport News, Virginia.

He was born January 2, 1951 in Chicago, Illinois to the late Robert Edward Mitchell, Sr. & Beatrice Walker
Mitchell. After the passing of his mother, he and his little brother, John P. Mitchell went to live in Mount
Holly, Arkansas with their Aunt Robbie. He graduated from New Hope High School in 1969 & afterwards
attended the HBCU currently known as University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.

In 1974 Robert was commissioned as an Officer in the United States Army from which he retired as a
Major after proudly serving 20 years. He held different titles while serving, most notably being an Armor
Officer and a Transportation Officer in Armor Battalion. During his military career he earned the
Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense
Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Army Service Ribbon, and Overseas Service Ribbon. His last
duty assignment was USA TRADOC in Fort Monroe, Virginia.

After retiring, Robert settled down in Newport News, Virginia, where he enjoyed spending his free time
with his family & friends. He was fondly known within his community, a generous donator to many
charities, a political enthusiast, avid sports fan & beloved father.

Robert’s memories will forever be cherished by his wife Elke B. Mitchell, daughter Ebony E. Mitchell,
stepson Nikolai K.G. Burkart, brother John P. Mitchell, “sister” Doris Gurganious Smith, life-long best
friend Melvin McDaniel and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
He will be laid to rest at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk, Virginia on Monday,

My heart is truly broken, it is hard to forget someone who gave everyone so much to remember, my memories of you will always be treasured. I called you today thinking you would answer your phone so I can wish you a happy New year,and a happy birthday tomorrow,like we always spoke .on our birthday’s,I couldn’t reach you so I started investigating, to find out that my birthday was our last call. I am so sorry I missed when you passed away. I couldn’t remember your daughters name but my condolences to her and your wife, You will always be my good friend,I will treasure every moment we shared, you helped me so much in my career, I wish I could express the sorrow I feel, may you RIP. Mitch was a great friend to me and my family. I met him while he was a Major in the Army at Fort Monroe, Va, and we've been friends ever since. He always offered good solid advice and I feel honored to have known such a great person. Mitch, we won't get to have that summer cookout we were planning but when we meet again, we will. Rest in Peace, buddy (I'm tearing up) and May God Bless the entire Mitchell family.

Uncle Robert was a good uncle. He never held his tongue. If he knew you was doing wrong, he would let you know. To my family, hold your head up. Uncle Robert would look at you and say"Im okay" Love Maria

Jr., I will always have a special place for you in my heart Cousin. I remember the times that Cousin Robbie and Cousin Joe “Baby” would bring you and “Lil Brother”down to our house, or my Dad and Mom or Aunt Julia and Uncle Nem would bring Freddie, Betty Ann and I to your home to play and terrorize each other. I enjoyed talking to you and your daughter, Ebony at the “Family Reunion” in 2018 in Little Rock. May You Rest In Peace Cousin. Gloria Crayton Prentice

I remember when we are practically live together when we were little. Junior and little brother was older than we were. But they would let us play basketball with them. We thought they belong to us whenever any other children would come around we didn't want them to let them play basketball.

Mitch was both a mentor & friend to me. He was truly an amazing, caring person and is missed. Our loss is Heaven's gain.

My prayers go out to the family of Mitch. I worked for Mitch at DCSE. He was one of the best supervisors that I ever. my prayers of condonlences go out
