Robert Lester Sampe

May 29, 1949 - July 11, 2021

Robert Lester Sampe, 72, of Poquoson, VA, died on July 11, 2021 at Sentara Careplex after a long battle with lung cancer. He was born somewhere in Michigan and adopted by loving parents in Wisconsin, Lester and Marian Sampe, who preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara; son, Bret (Poquoson, VA); daughter, Brenda and her husband, Joe (Richmond, VA).

Bob retired from the Air Force after 26 years of service and many wonderful experiences overseas, Alaska, Michigan and Langley. He continued to serve as a contractor and civil service employee until finally retiring in 2015. He graduated from high school in Wisconsin, and Embry Riddle with bachelor and masters’ degrees. His favorite job was managing the Langley AFB Aero Club. He volunteered many hours with the Poquoson CERT organization from 2013 to 2018, serving as training manager (2014 – 2016) and chair (2016 – 2018) until he was no longer able to contribute. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, puzzles, and yearly trips to Wisconsin to spend quality time with family and friends.

No services will be held. Memorial contributions may be made to the Peninsula Food Bank.

Many thanks to all the special people he was privileged to know on his journey through life. The nurses at Sentara Careplex hospital will be especially remembered for their kindness and caring at the end of his journey.

Dear Barbara, Brenda, Bret and Family - It is with heartfelt sadness that I’m sending sincere condolences on Bob’s passing. He was always ready to lend support or a helping hand. I’m reflecting fondly on rides to the airport and the many fun lunches we shared. One particularly memorable lunch was at the Langley Marina, where we encountered road construction on the way. The typical warning “speed bump” signs were visible, to include the one that said, “speed hump”! We got a lot of laughs out of that one at subsequent lunches! I know how difficult it is for you to be without your partner, Barb, you two were truly inseparable. May God enfold you in His loving arms, and bring you and yours, comfort and peace. Bob was an amazingly generous man who, along with his wife Barbara, supported the Tidewater AFCEA Chapter over many years. Our Chapter was enriched by the lights they shined at every activity; the brilliant smiles and great personalities that were engaging to all whom met them. Barb and and family, We were so shocked to hear about Bob, did not realize he was that sick. I enjoyed the many years working with him going over the Aero Club financials but also just visiting the club and getting to know the people and the planes. Barb, thoughts and prayers continue for you and your family. Bob was a great leader and teacher. Our hearts are broken for this loss but God had other plans, as Bob is now flying in Heaven with the Angels.
