Sherry was born in Norfolk, VA on August 10, 1948 and was a lifelong resident of Virginia Beach, where she graduated from Princess Anne High School in 1966. She was a long-time member of Thalia Lynn Baptist Church and began there while in high school. After graduating from high school, she attended Hicks Beauty Academy where she obtained her Cosmetology license.
Sherry was a hairdresser for 30+ years and she also worked for Virginia Beach Public Schools for 17 years as a special education teacher assistant. She was a loving mother, Grammy and above all, she loved the Lord. She showed kindness to everyone she met and loved to help others. Her favorite hobbies were reading her Bible, crocheting, and doing karaoke.
Left to cherish her memory, are her two children, Robert W. Barrett and his wife Jessica and Kimberly A. Leon and her husband David; eight grandchildren: Tristan, Bryanna, Bethany, Chloe, Chelsea, Blake, Dylan, and Sydney; two great-grandchildren, Grayson and Sloane; her sister, Patti L. Shawn and her husband Lee; nephews: Michael, Glenn, Shawn, Joshua, and Jacob; and many extended relatives and friends. She was predeceased in death by her parents, Melvin H. Lewis and Sarah P. Lewis, and her siblings, Glenda E. Rife and Richard “Todd” Lewis.
The family would like to give special thanks to Autumn Care of Chesapeake and Amedysis Hospice Care for the loving and compassionate care they provided.
A celebration of her life will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Sherry’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Association. Condolences may be offered at www.vacremationsociety.com.
