Shirley crossed the rainbow bridge to Heaven on August 18, 2021. Shirley graduated from Warwick High School in Newport News, VA in 1955. Attended Southern Seminary Junior College in 1956 and Manhattan Medical and Laboratory Technician Institute, New York in 1957. She met her future husband, Jerome A. Meyers, on a blind date arranged by their college roommates. They both say that was the best blind date ever, as they were married in September, 1957 and remained at each other’s side for over 64 years.
Shirley was the wonderful Mother of five children: Jerome A. Jr., Michael S., Alan P., Cynthia L. and Jeffrey M. She is survived by her husband Jerome A. Meyers; son, Michael and Peggy Meyers of Williamsburg, VA; and grandchildren, Michael Meyers and Hope and Andrew Weller; son, Alan and Michele Meyers of Dallas TX; daughter, Cynthia and Dr. Robert Freeman of Williamsburg; and grandchildren, Marissa Freeman and Miguel Alaniz, and Lucas J. Freeman; Jeffrey and Kerrie Meyers of Fort Meyers, FL; and granddaughters, Olivia and Cameron Meyers.
Her children were the joy of her life followed by her love of horses, dogs, cats and parrots. She convinced the family to get two horses while stationed at the USAF Academy, which lead to many years of Barrel Racing, Gymkhanas and riding through the Pike National Forest with her horse and dog Snoopy a Belgian Shepherd, Coyote mix. Shirley obedience trained Snoopy and several dogs that followed. She trained Ozzie her schipperke to compete in agility events and serve as a therapy dog. Shirley and Ozzie visited hospitals and nursing care facilities with a local volunteer group for several years.
Shirley continued horseback riding throughout her life. In 1984 her mare, Molly, was the Morgan Grand Champion at the Virginia State Fair. She especially enjoyed a three year stay in Burbank, CA where her home was one block from Griffith Park, Los Angeles with its fifty miles of horse trails. She entered and won many Carriage Contests and Endurance Rides in the Los Angeles area. She rode daily in and around Griffith Park and kept a full calendar of riding appointments with other horse owners, parades and riding events.
She was a true and loyal wife and mother who constantly contributed to Jerry’s happiness. She managed the family by herself while Jerry served in Vietnam and during numerous TDY assignments. She received a certificate of appreciation from the Chief of Staff of the USAF thanking her for her service and support of the Air Force upon Jerry’s retirement. She was a beautiful, devoted and ideal wife and mother who is sorely missed. No services are planned. She will be interred with her husband at Arlington National Cemetery in the future.
