Susie Snead, 81, of Corolla, NC passed away on Friday, July 26, 2019. She was born on July 12, 1938 in High Point, North Carolina. She was a wonderful mother, daughter, sister, aunt and a devoted friend and was loved and respected by all who knew her. She lived in Yorktown, VA for the majority of her life, residing in the Marlbank community for more than thirty years. It was in this community that she raised her five children and made lifelong friends.
After retiring from the Kingsmill Resort and Conference Center in Williamsburg, VA, she moved to the beach in Corolla, NC in 1994. She not only became a beach bum scouring the beach for shells and sea glass, but worked at the Sanderling Inn Resort in Duck, NC until 1999. She loved to travel and touched all 7 continents over the years. Some of her adventures included snorkeling, white water rafting, cruising the high seas, and bungee jumping off a bridge in New Zealand. To remember her trips, she collected trinkets from around the globe for her family to enjoy. She had a great love of art and had many pieces from local artist. She played tennis as much as possible and had quite a spin on the ball and was known by her tennis friends as quite the athlete. Every morning, you could find her with her newspaper doing the crossword puzzle and reading books from the library. What brought mom the most joy through the years was being involved with her children and grandchildren and having us come to visit her at the beach. Mom’s famous lasagna was not only the highlight of our visits, but was expected and enjoyed by all.
Susie’s passion for her volunteer work was immeasurable. The Snead kids were involved in many activities over the years, which kept her very busy. From volunteering in the clinic at school, being the room mom, coaching little league, sewing uniforms, being a judge at the swim meets, keeping the nursery at church or teaching about the animals at the nature museum- she was always there. That did not end when the Snead kids were grown and gone. She was committed to many local organizations in the Corolla area which included: The Hotline Thrift Store, The Friends of the Corolla Library, The Woman’s Club and The Whalehead Club. She was also a friend at the Corolla Chapel.
Susie was preceded in death by her parents, Todd and Hazel McGahey and her sister, Jane Galbavy. She is survived by her twin brother, John McGahey (Glenna) of Dunwoody, GA. Five children, Sheron Myers (Tim) of Mechanicsville, Va.; Jane Buchanan (Steve) of Haymarket, Va.; Cindy Keener (Jason) of Ashland, Va.; Jeffrey Snead (Sally) of Richmond Va. and Joseph Snead (Deanna) of Raleigh, NC. Grandma Susie loved her 19 grandchildren unconditionally, and she will be deeply missed by them as well as many other extended family members and friends.
