It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Thomas Donald “Tom” Broadbent, Sr., who departed this world on January 4, 2026, at the age of 68, in Chesapeake, VA. Born on August 15, 1957, in the charming state of Connecticut, Tom’s journey through life was one marked by love, dedication, and an unwavering spirit.

Tom was a man who believed in the power of hard work and family. From a young age, he took on the responsibility of supporting his siblings and family, demonstrating a selflessness and strength that would define him throughout his life. As a truck driver with SpartanNash Military Distributors, Tom had the unique opportunity to traverse the vast landscapes of our nation, a testament to his adventurous spirit and love for seeing the world.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Tom found joy in the simpler things. He loved tending to his garden and feeding his beloved chickens, where he found peace and fulfillment. Known for his infectious smile and generous heart, Tom delighted in playing Santa Claus, bringing joy and warmth to those around him. And, of course, he could never resist a good banana split, a simple pleasure that brought him immense happiness.

Tom never met a stranger; his welcoming nature and genuine kindness endeared him to everyone he encountered. He had an extraordinary ability to make people feel valued and loved, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Hal E. Broadbent, Sr. and Mary Broadbent, and his brother, Chester Broadbent. Tom leaves behind his devoted wife of 48 years, Phyllis Broadbent, who stood by his side through life’s many adventures. His legacy lives on through his children, Thomas “Tommy” Broadbent, Jr. and his wife, Sophia, and his daughter, Tabbatha Broadbent. He was the proud grandfather to six grandchildren: Jonathan Blake Broadbent, Dennis Robert Green, Jacob Tyler Broadbent, Jared Dalton Broadbent, Kuruk Wayne Broadbent, and Kaliana Aleiah Broadbent. Tom is also survived by his siblings, Hal, Jr. “Butch”, Mary, Jessie, Robert “Bobby”, and Eddie, who will forever cherish the memories they shared.
