Thomas Lafayette Hemphill, of Chesapeake, VA, passed away peacefully on December 5, 2025 at the Hospice House of Williamsburg, VA at the age of 100.
He was born October 28, 1925 in Ridgewood NJ , graduating from Ridgewood High School in 1943. He later graduated from Harvard University, class of 1947. While at Harvard, he joined the Army (ROTC), serving in the Army Air Corp as a navigator.
Thomas worked at New York Life in New York City for his entire career while residing in Manhasset (Long Island), NY. Upon his early retirement, he moved to Virginia Beach and then Chesapeake, VA. He was a Christian man who lived his life by faith and a love for those around him. He served in various organizations throughout his life and touched the lives of many. He had a passion for nature and the beauty of the water.
He is survived by his husband, James Hook of Chesapeake, VA; nieces, Heather Keeley of Richmond, VA and Patricia Ruggiero of Santa Barbara, CA. In addition, he leaves behind several grand nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by parents, Joktan Lafayette Hemphill and Alice Silleck Hemphill and sisters, Mary H. Haring and Barbara H. Crawford.
