On October 4, 2021, Wallace Hinckley Bender of Norfolk, Virginia passed away peacefully at his home at the age of 100 years. Wally, as most people knew him, made an impact on everyone who met him.
Wallace was born on September 3, 1921. He resided in Pennsylvania and New Jersey prior to graduating from Edward C. Knight Senior High School in 1939. During WWII he served as Captain of the US Army aboard the U.S.S. Estes, and was recognized for his command and leadership duty during WWII operations in five major engagements including Iwo Jima and Okinawa during the period of 1944-1945. He graduated in 1952 from Oklahoma State University with a degree in Engineering. He worked as a Civil Engineer for the Air Force throughout his career.
He is survived by his sons David Bender and Wallace H. Bender III; his daughter Patricia Reno and her husband John; grandchildren Anthony Reno and Nicole Reno; his daughter Carla Pittman and her husband Virgil; grandson David Pittman and his wife Jenny; great-grandsons Jace Pittman and Devon Pittman. No service is planned at this time.
