Tears fill my eyes as I remember all of our fun times growing up and getting together at Grandma and Grandpa Coates for holiday dinners. The laughter was so wonderful and kidding around with Walt, Gerry, Roger, Bruce, Gus and Brenda. All cousins. Brenda and I were the only girls in the family and boy did we get teased ! These were just a few of the boys in the family, but we were the oldest. I guess I have tears because as I've gotten older, In my mind, I feel younger and that we would all go on forever on this old earth of ours. We will meet again in that beautiful place called heaven. My love goes out to the families who will gather at Walt's memorial. We will not be able to make it but our hearts and thoughts will be with Walt's families. God's Blessing on you dear Walt. We love you.
Bob and Marcella Butler left a message on April 8, 2018:
Walt became endeared to our family after he and Bob became friends at the YMCA pool. Walt helped us start our own raised beds and often asked us to pick produce from their lovely gardens. We loved all of our days at their home and learned much about caring for our plants. He and Aurie often dropped by our home with their produce to share with our large family. Their smiles and kindness were contagious. Walt and Aurie raised and sold Japanese Red Maple trees to support their missionary son and his family in Cambodia. He was a true master of horticulture. He was once given hundreds of pounds of daffodil bulbs. We took loads of them and gave them away at church, local farms and the YMCA. His flowers are multiplying all over Chesapeake and as far west as Amelia, Va. We have missed Walt and Aurie’s visits since their health has failed them. We trust that Walt is safe in the arms of our Lord, Jesus Christ and that we will see him again one day!

Walt was a true gentleman- wise and generous with his knowledge and the fruits of his gardening passion. I am fortunate to have meet him and to have a part of him continuing to grow in my humble garden. Thoughts and prayers to all who loved him.

Walt's opportunity in giving and assisting others had no limits. He always had a smile and willing to go the extra mile for one and all. The Currituck Master Gardeners were blessed to have had him as one of our members plus sharing with us his expertise but more importantly being our friend. Thank you Walt! May God be with his family.
Peace of mind is a call away. We’re here when you need us most.
