Walter McLaughlin, 71, of North Virginia, passed away peacefully surrounded by close friends and family after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Though his journey was difficult, Walt faced it with bravery, grace, and most importantly some mostly tasteful humor.

He was married to Debbie for 35 years. Walt was a devoted father to Suzanne (Ralph), Ross (Alexis), and Ashley Stegall (Sam). He was the adoring grandfather of Rylee McLaughlin, Abigail Stegall, and Ellison Stegall.

He found great joy in the special bond he shared with his siblings and their families, Steve McLaughlin (Peggy) and Eva Pietsch (Chuck). When married he was welcomed by his in-laws Tom and Sue Slocum. He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Virginia McLaughlin, his brother, Michael McLaughlin, and his niece, Claire McLaughlin.

Born on May 14, 1954, in Youngstown, Ohio, Walt built a life full of love, laughter, and lasting friendships. He reminisced of his time in Ohio, Arizona, South Carolina, and Virginia. He found his home both in Mathews and Fredericksburg, Virginia.

Walt’s professional life was one of dedication and passion. He loved restaurant management and proved his culinary and mixology skills at every chance. He worked as a Locomotive Conductor for Virginia Rail and previously a Locomotive Engineer for CSX. He loved his job and the people he worked alongside.

Beyond his career, Walt’s life was defined by his friendships. He never failed to bring the music and laughter. He especially enjoyed weekend travels to his slice of paradise Mathews County, Virginia visiting his close friends turned family, the Machens. He traveled with his beloved four legged companion Petey.

Before his passing, Walt filled his days with the things he loved most—whooping his kids at jeopardy, scrabbling, sunning poolside or at the shore, fishing, following sports, and singing karaoke all with friends and family. Most of these moments brought him joy and peace. He was passionate in cheering for his Cleveland Browns and Cleveland Guardians, which kept his language fresh, vocal cords primed, and blood pressure up.

Walt will be cremated, and a memorial service will be announced at a later date.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to everyone who helped Walt smile and feel loved in his final days. Their care and presence brought comfort. One of his final wishes was to “Thank everyone for their prayers.” The family would like to especially thank Dr. Peter Zullo for his exceptional care and compassion. Walt’s life was a testament to love, loyalty, and laughter. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
