Yvonne B. Powell, 75, passed into eternal rest on March 22, 2023. She was preceded in death by her parents, Marshall and Anita Brown; and husband, Walter (Pete) Powell.
Born in Richmond, VA, she lived most of her life in Hampton. Yvonne was a devout Christian and lived according to the principles of her faith. She was a kind and loving woman who devoted her life to her family, her church and her beloved pets.
After graduating from Hampton High School, Yvonne began her career at NASA, as a secretary. She retired as a Budget Analyst from the Army at Ft. Monroe after 30 years there. She was proud of her work for the Army, made many friends, and won many awards and accolades. Yvonne was also a beautiful singer, and sang in church for most of her life. She was known to sing as a gift to family and friends when they were under the weather, or were celebrating. She was a constant source of comfort and support, always ready with a kind word or a helping hand when someone needed it most. In her free time she liked to work in her yard, feed the birds, and watch NASCAR-she always knew who won the race.
Yvonne was a loving wife, sister, mother and friend, whose unwavering faith and gentle spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her brothers, Frank Brown (Jane), Wayne Brown (Barbara), and Bill Brown (Janet); her daughter, Anita Powell-Byrd (Rick), and son, Andrew (Drew) Powell (Dawn); 3 granddaughters; one great grandson; 7 nieces and nephews, and brothers/sisters-in-law who were like her own family. Her family takes comfort in knowing that she is now at peace with her Heavenly Father.
It is with much gratitude that Yvonne’s family thanks all who have offered their support and prayers during this difficult time, especially Commonwealth Senior Living Sweet Memories staff, and At Home Care Hospice staff, all of whom took care of Yvonne in her last months. With heavy hearts and profound sadness, and also knowing that Yvonne is “home”, a funeral service will be held at Faith Baptist Church, 100 Blackburn Lane, Hampton, VA on April 29th, at 1 pm, where family and friends will gather to celebrate the life of this wonderful woman, and bid her a fond farewell. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to Alzheimer’s Association, ALZ.org, in memory of Yvonne.
