David was born on April 6, 1934 in Norfolk, Va. He was predeceased by his parents, Virginia V. Hilton and Ellis Baker Hilton Sr., his brother, Ellis Baker Hilton Jr., his infant son, James David Hilton and grandson David James (DJ) Hilton
David was a graduate of Granby High School and Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI) with a degree in Bachelor of Science.
This led him to NASA Langley in 1957 where he was an Aeronautical Engineer. David left NASA after 23 years in 1980 to accept a position with Gulf Stream Aerospace as Flight Science Director of Aviation in Savannah, GA. He retired in 2006.
David graduated from the Virginia Beach Police Department Auxiliary Academy in 1977 and retired in 2002.
During his time at Gulfstream Aerospace he would commute home to Virginia Beach on Friday night in his beloved red convertible corvette to volunteer every Saturday morning at the 2nd Pct. Often times riding a motorcycle or ATV on the boardwalk. He did this for the next 22 years, often times filling in for the “regulars” so they may be granted leave.
“Grandad” as he was called had a deep love for his wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, but first and foremost his love for his Saviour, Jesus Christ.
Most mornings you would find Dad kneeling in front of his chair praising his Saviour and praying for his family until the effects of Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s took its toll on him. “ At the name of Jesus every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father”. Philippians 2:10-11
David is survived by his loving wife Jeannette Baer Hilton of 60 years; his daughters, Susan Shell Hilton (Scott), Julia Ann Hilton (Chuck): son, David Ellis Hilton (Amy); 7 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; many friends in Christ and his Brothers and Sisters in Blue.
The family would like to thank Dr. Brant Thomas and his staff at Lifeway Family Physicians, Compassionate Care who provided hospice care during his last weeks at home, also family friend Donna Banks who often sat with Dad to offer his wife Jeannette much needed rest.
Dad’s homecoming will be celebrated on May 12, 2018 at 11:00 am at Virginia Beach Community Chapel 1261 Laskin Road Va Bch, 23451.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Ohio State University Foundation PO Box 710811 Columbus, OH 43271-0811 to David J. Hilton Memorial Scholarship #315281.
