Alice Crook Massay died at home in Virginia Beach on April 22, 2024. She was born in Wadsworth, Ohio, on August 19, 1929.
Alice attended the Wadsworth schools and was a very talented and gifted student. She was the valedictorian of the class of 1947 of Wadsworth High School. She attended Bethany College, Bethany, West Virginia. Again, she was the valedictorian of her college class. She was an excellent editor and proofreader. In retirement, she used these skills to help her son for many years with his business.
Alice married George Massay on August 18, 1951, at Wadsworth Church of Christ. They served Christian Churches and Churches of Christ in Canada, England, Missouri, and Virginia. Alice was the church secretary, taught Sunday School classes, and led youth and women’s groups during those years.
During the summer of 1949, Alice was one of four American Christian Church college students chosen to Caravan to England and fellowship with the British Churches of Christ. She made connections with the British churches and was able to arrange for George to minister with the Wansworth Bridge Road Church of Christ in London in 1953. She had a lifelong interest in the English Churches of Christ.
She was a member of Kempsville Christian Church in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Although she was not able to participate in the church, she appreciated visits from Josh Childress and other members of the church.
Alice was preceded in death by her husband, George, her parents, Sid and Velma Crook, her brother, Jim, her sister, Carolyn, and her niece, Janet.
Survivors include her son, Jim; granddaughter, Meredythe (Shawn); grandson, Mark Joseph (Julia); great granddaughter, Eleanor; a special cousin, Krystal Longest (Jay) and her children Aubrie, J.C., and Leona; six nieces, Rachel, Barbara, Frances, Denise, Annette, and Janine; and a brother-in-law Michael Greenblatt (Margaret). Family was very important to her, and she strived to provide a stable and loving home for her son and grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at Kempsville Christian Church conducted by Josh Childress at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 11. Followed by a luncheon in the church fellowship hall.
Her ashes will be interred this summer in the Harlem Springs Cemetery, Harlem Springs, Ohio, alongside her husband, George. Members of the Massay and Guess families have been buried for generations in the cemetery.
