In Loving Memory of Alma P. Loatman
September 13, 1943 – April 1, 2025
Alma Loatman, a beloved mother, sister, grandmother, aunt and treasured friend, passed away peacefully on April 1, 2025, at the age of 81, in Hampton, Virginia. Born on September 13, 1943, in Brooklyn, New York, Alma was a beacon of warmth to all who knew her.
Fittingly, her name—Alma—means “nurturing soul” and “kind-hearted.” It is a name that reflected Alma’s spirit in every way. She carried herself with gentleness and strength, pouring love into the lives of her family, friends, and all who had the honor of crossing her path.
Alma dedicated her professional life to the New York City Housing Authority, working diligently as a bookkeeper to improve the lives of those in her community. Her commitment was more than just a job—it was a reflection of her calling to serve with compassion, integrity, and a deep sense of responsibility.
As a woman rooted in faith, Alma was a devoted member of Sixth Mt. Zion Baptist Temple. Her spiritual walk was a source of strength, and she lived her life as a quiet testament to God’s love. She also pursued continued learning at Kingsborough Community College, embodying her belief in growth, purpose, and education at every stage of life. This is a lesson she imparted to her family as well.
Family was Alma’s greatest joy. Her heart found its fullest expression in the company of her daughters, siblings, grandchildren, (grand) nieces, (grand) nephews and other loved ones. She adored family gatherings–especially if there was a game of Po-Ke-No being played–laughter around the table, and sharing stories that bound generations together. She had an infectious laugh and a great sense of humor. She was easy to talk to and was always willing to lend a helping hand. Her love of singing brought comfort, beauty, and joy into her home and into the hearts of all who experienced it.
Alma is preceded in eternal rest by her parents, Harold Q. Williams and Addie Mae Cole; her sister, Dorothy Council; and her brother, Harold Williams. She leaves behind a legacy of love, wisdom, and unwavering faith through her daughters, Keris Purdie and Tamara Clark; her dear sister, Gail Brooks; her grandchildren, Erin Purdie, Christian Purdie, Bryce Clark and Bree Clark, and nieces and nephews who will carry her light forward.
Alma’s life exemplified kindness and her presence was a gift from God. And although we grieve, we find comfort in the words of scripture: “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 4:7
Alma’s gentle spirit will live on in every life she touched. She will be deeply missed, endlessly loved, and forever remembered by her family and friends.
Details regarding the Celebration of Life honoring Alma’s beautiful legacy will be shared with family and friends in the days to come.
