VIRGINIA BEACH – Barbara A. “Babs” Womble went home to be with her Lord Aug. 22, 2009. She was born to Angus M. Avard and Eleanor O. Avard on April 26, 1937, in Flushing, Long Island, N.Y. Surviving are her husband of 52 years, Pastor James E. Womble, retired. She is also survived by children: a son, James E. Womble Jr. and his wife Ann Bryan A. Womble of Marietta, Ga.; a daughter, Kimberly D. Hawkins and her husband Albin L. Hawkins of Highland, Md.; two grandchildren, Katherine A. Womble and Ashley A. Womble of Marietta; and by a sister, Dale A. Keith of Virginia Beach. Mrs. Womble was a member of the Kempsville Baptist Church, Virginia Beach. She was the first Junior Commodore of the Atlanta Yacht Club, Acworth, Ga. While a Junior Commodore she and associates started summer church services at the yacht club that continues for more than 50 years. At Northside High School she was a member of the National Honor Society, co-editor of her high school annual, co-captain of the girls basketball team, and was on the all-star and all-state girls basketball teams, and was senior superlative, Most Athletic. She attended Wake Forest University and nine years later in 1958, as a wife and mother of two children, she received her B.S. degree in elementary education from Old Dominion University. She held membership in the Mayflower Society and was a retired 30-year Norfolk City Schools teacher. A celebration of her life service will be held Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2009, at 11 a.m. in Kempsville Baptist Church, 5204 Princess Anne Road, Virginia Beach, with Dr. Kelly Burris officiating. Burial will be at a later date. The family will remain after the service for visitation. Cremation Society of Virginia is assisting the family.
