Barbara J. Arnold, born on May 27, 1953, in New York City, passed away peacefully on November 24, 2024, in Virginia Beach at the age of 71.

Barbara dedicated her life to the service of others, having spent her career as a compassionate social worker. Her commitment to the community extended beyond her professional work, as she was deeply involved in children’s events and demonstrated unwavering support for local elementary schools. Her nurturing spirit was evident through her volunteer work with the Girl Scouts, where she served as an Assistant Leader, guiding and inspiring young girls.

A woman of many talents, Barbara found joy in arts and crafts, often creating beautiful pieces that reflected her vibrant personality. She cherished the connections she made through these interests and shared her passion generously with those around her.

In addition to her contributions to her local community, Barbara was an active member of the USCG Moms group on Facebook, where she formed lasting friendships and provided support to fellow members.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Warren and Catherine Howes, and her brother, Kenneth Howes. She is survived by her beloved husband, Dennis; her children, Matthew Arnold and his wife, Maki, and Kristina Arnold; her cherished grandchildren, Kasey and Tylor; and her sister, Kathy Giese.

Barbara’s legacy of love, kindness, and dedication to others will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her family takes comfort in the memories they shared and the impact she made in her community.

Private family services are currently pending, allowing those closest to her to celebrate her life in a manner that reflects the deep love and respect they hold for her.

I've known Mrs. Arnold for more years than I can count. I am fortunate to be friends with both Kristina and Matt. Mrs. Arnold was always very kind to me and my brother. She was at every play performance through high school. She also adopted Riley, one my dog's puppies. I will miss her gentle demeanor and kind smile. She was such a wonderful mother and good to those of us who were very close to her kids. Matt, Kristina, Mr. Arnold I'm so sorry for your loss. I wish I wasn't so far away or I'd be there to give you a hug.

Barb was a friend whom most of us Coast Guard Moms had never met. She will be missed by our group and many others.

I knew Barb through her kind and insightful comments on the USCG Moms FB page. She made everyone feel so welcome. Please accept my condolences.

Barb was an old friend I never met. Her presence was a driving force on the USCG moms page, usually the first to respond to a post. Barb always had a kind word, a slew of ancestors to show us or some other note of interest. She was so proud of her family. Barb will be missed by so many. may she rest in peace.

Barbara was a dedicated source of comfort for so many USCG moms. I can only hope that her family and friends can feel the thoughts, prayers, and hugs from us all in the USCG Mom group.

Like many others, I “met” Barb on the USCG Moms page. She always had something kind or encouraging to say, was quick to offer help, and was so proud of her children and grandchildren. I’m met Barb through the USCG Mom‘s page. Although I never met her in person, I got to know what a beautiful soul she was through private messages every so often and all of her beautiful postings of her family, and how proud she was of her Coast Guard son, daughter in law, and her adorable grandsons who meant the world to her… such a special lady, she will be missed❤️

Barb and I became friends right after my daughter joined the USCG...I soon went beyond being friends on the "Mom's page". We texted quite regularly lifting each other up and supporting each other. Sometimes talking late into the night. A kinder, sweeter, more supportive person would be hard to find. I know she repeatedly told me how much joy she got from looking at my backyard bird pictures. I will miss her so very much! Please know how much she meant to do many of us. Fly high with my crows and ravens Barb...finally pain free 💞💞

Barb was a constant positive influence on the US Coast Guard Moms Facebook page. She had an upbeat comment or a message of support for everyone. I offer prayers for her eternal rest and for comfort, peace and treasured memories for her family and friends.

Barb was one of the first moms that I interacted when my son joined the USCG. Although I never had a chance to meet her in person, it was clear that she loved her family and being a USCG Mom. My heartfelt condolences to all her family.

I met Barb about six years ago on our Coast Guard Mom’s page. She was so warm, friendly and encouraging, and my life is better for having known her. I will miss her dearly. My most sincere condolences to her family and friends.

As with many of the Coast Guard Moms I enjoyed a facebook friendship with Barb. She was very active on our page and many times was the first to offer encouragement or send prayers when needed. I enjoyed and looked forward to our conversations in private messages. She will truly be missed. Sending prayers to her family....

I've known Barb for many years through our USCG Moms page and was so sad to hear of her passing. She spoke often of her husband, son and daughter, and her grandsons. She was always a great source of support for others in need, a great resource for genealogy information, and was always there with great historical photos when we discussed military service. She will be greatly missed!
