Bernie, I learned a lot from you in life. You were one of a kind, a very special man, and I will miss you very much. I will especially miss our golf matches together, chipping and grilling out in the backyard, stopping at 7-Eleven for your cup of coffee before heading to the golf course, watching your straight drives down the middle of the fairway, and watching you tinker with your already perfect swing. Even in older age, I could never get the best of you on the course - and that's okay. It was a honor and privilege to know you. Thank you for all that you did for me in the years that I knew you. You will always be remembered fondly and with the utmost respect. Enjoy the lush, green fairways and smooth putting greens in the clear, blue skies and warm, sunny days of heaven. I know you are shooting under par now :- Love, Dave

My heartfelt condolences to all in the family. I'll never forget the days of Bernie, Bruce and Terry playing golf together and playing in the Father/ son events at Eagle Haven. Bernie was a class act, a true golfer that was a real competitor and always played by the book. I always enjoyed listening to Bernie's golf tales.

I have many great memories of my grandfather; I will hold them close to my heart. My grandfather and dad tried countless times to teach me the game of golf. I never learned how to play. I remember walking 18 holes with them. He made me laugh numerous times and shared stories from his naval career. They definitely broke the mold when they made this brilliant man. I will love and miss my grandfather forever. I will always cherish the time I spent with him. My Dad and grandfather are together playing 18 holes of golf in heaven. My grandfather is winning of course. I love you grandpa.

To Bernie and his family, For my father, Bob and myself, I say we are so sorry for Bernie's passing. Navy families are made up of "Good" people and he was "Good" people. Bernie was a Man's man, a true sailor. My father and I played golf with Bernie many times. Terry and Bernie teamed with my father and I, at Eagle Haven, for the father/son tournament more than once. These memories are everlasting and precious. My father is recovery from surgery at this time and asked that I honor his friend, and I do so gladly. He was my friend as well. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with your family.

Shankle I can't say I ever played golf with you but I heard many stories about it from you. But I did enjoy many lunches with you in the Virginia Beach Schools lunch room, You were the only person I knew who could talk ninety miles a minute and never miss a bite of your food, Janell, Terry, Matt and Dianna praying God will hold you all tenderly and keep you all close to His heart in this time of sadness.
